David Slegers

Born in Chino in 1987, David Slegers grew up surrounded by cows and open spaces. Now based in Pasadena, he has spent countless hours traveling on foot through the city of Los Angeles, chronicling his findings on camera while attempting to uncover the nature of the space itself. Stirred by what he has seen, David has used his experiences in the city to create works of art that illustrate mankind’s struggle to find reason and relief in an adverse and absurd world of our own devising. David has recently been consumed by the idea of the city as an entity, possessing both aura and influence, and has sought to document and capture this idea through his work, in whatever medium he chooses.

To The Earth As It Was

In May of 2019, David discovered a deconstruction site not far from his apartment. Following this discovery, he spent the next three months visiting (and entering) this deconstruction site countless times with his camera. The site quickly became a sanctuary of sorts, and captured his imagination unlike any place he has photographed before or since. With each visit, as the building continued to erode and dematerialize, it began to reveal new textures, shapes, shadows, and perspectives, and offered a strange, yet much-needed sense of peace and solitude during a lowly period in his life. Having captured thousands of images from that site, David has since spent time editing, and more truthfully, contemplating exactly what drew him to this space, and why it resonated with him so strongly.

Coupled with these images are photographs David has captured in another of his favorite places, Death Valley National Park. Paired together, these images evoke an idea that has long driven David’s creative process, that of the ephemeral and fragile nature of human existence and enterprise. The transience of the ruined structure, in conjunction with the very essence of the desert itself, at once hostile yet continually changing, serves as an apt visual metaphor for the slow yet inevitable process of returning to dust.

Recollections

Using a variety of media—including collage, ink, pencil, and gouache—David focuses on finer details, constructing small, intricate works on paper that strive to disassemble our world and examine our relationship with it. A nascent fixation on architecture, infrastructure, and urban decay, coupled with a lifetime of doodling, sketching, and exploring, has steadily led to the formation and creation of this current body of work. The idea of the city, from both a macro and micro perspective, serves as David’s primary inspiration. Constantly dabbling in a variety of disciplines, his newfound interest in the city has led to a myriad of (somewhat) academic wormholes, including entropy, termite colonies, and cellular biology. With these ideas in mind, the ultimate results are these Recollections; i.e., schematics for dream worlds, blueprints for the inexpressible, or alien QR codes for a species struggling to comprehend our world.

Canids

Coyotes are David’s favorite animal. A much-maligned yet misunderstood species, coyotes constantly straddle the line between wilderness and civilization and succeed in this endeavor perhaps better than any other species. And yet, for this reason, they are not celebrated but often hated. As someone who grew up on a farm and now finds himself amid the city, David has found much to admire and relate to in this wily creature. Coyotes do nothing but survive and adapt, yet they remain the consummate outsider, unwanted in nearly every environment they encounter. As a simple tribute to his undying fascination with this most disparaged of all canids, David has painted these acrylic portraits.
