Collection: Josh Kendall

Josh Kendall is a San Fernando Valley native whose creative journey began with music. A self-taught guitarist, bassist, and drummer, he has been playing in bands since the age of 14. For most of his life, music was his primary artistic outlet. This changed about five years ago when he moved into a house with a two-car garage, giving him the space to explore new hands-on projects in his spare time. This shift sparked a new phase of artistic exploration, moving beyond music into visual and mixed-media art.

Giving Dead Media New Life: Josh Kendall’s Creative Revival

Josh began his hands-on creative journey by restoring discarded roadside furniture—sanding, fractal burning, and refinishing each piece. This led him to refinish one of his own drum sets, sparking a new passion. He soon started acquiring used drum kits specifically for the purpose of transforming them. As his interest grew, fractal burning alone no longer fulfilled his creative vision, prompting him to experiment with bold color combinations and splatter techniques to expand his artistic expression.

In a recent interview with S7CAG, Josh shared how he shifted his creative direction: “After a few months, I realized I didn’t have the storage space I needed to continue this new hobby of mine. That’s when I realized I could use canvas or flat pieces of wood.” Along with this insight, Josh repurposed his personal collection of old CDs, cassettes, and vinyl records. “I quickly realized I could make art using ‘dead’ media. I thought it would be cool to give my old music media a second life.” This inspired a new body of work incorporating splatter paint and obsolete music formats. “At this point, I really didn’t know what to do with the pieces,” he added. “I just knew I loved making them. In the back of my mind, I thought maybe they would look cool in a record store, brewery, or coffee shop.”

Josh Kendall’s artwork centers around 1/4-inch sande plywood, dead media (such as CDs, cassettes, and vinyl), and paint. He sees endless possibilities in his medium, with the media itself often inspiring the initial concept. The application of paint can take the piece in a completely new direction—an element of surprise he enjoys. His process involves cutting, sanding, arranging the media, and applying splatter paint, with color playing a vital role. Kendall visualizes his color palette before beginning, selecting hues that align with the image in his mind. His lifelong consumption of music media, books, and magazines has influenced his artistic development, and his love for mid-century modern design, vintage neon signs, architecture, and classic automobiles also inform the visual language of his work.

Regarding his creative process, Kendall states, “I think I work from both intuition and concept. I see many things in my head first, and then attempt to create them. This is actually how making music worked for me as well.” For Josh, color selection can be spontaneous, or he might envision a color combination like, “That red would go great with a canary yellow and a turquoise splatter.” He adds, “It all comes together really fast, and I won’t be satisfied with myself until I make it happen.”

Old Soul, Bold Colors: The Aesthetic World of Josh Kendall

Color also plays a significant role in Josh's daily life. “I get to wear very cool Hawaiian shirts for my day job, and they come in so many different designs and colors. I’ve definitely been inspired by some of my shirts.” His home, filled with music, movie, and vintage advertising posters, also influences his artistic choices. The Dead Media series started as a personal project, where Kendall began arranging cassettes, CDs, and vinyl on boards for visual balance and color harmony, initially without paint. “It was just for myself, to hang on my walls,” he notes. Eventually, his creative instincts led him to experiment with paint, resulting in the bold and expressive Phase 33 series—an abstract collection that is a further evolution of his artwork.

Josh Kendall hopes his work sparks conversation, believing that “when viewing art, your opinions and feelings about it are generally relative to your own life experience.” Often described as having an old soul by friends and family, Kendall’s deep appreciation for vintage clothing, old music, classic films and television, and even nostalgic candy like Pez is reflected in his work. He creates pieces that resonate with his own identity, explaining, “I only make art pieces that I would want myself. I’ve never tried to make something for someone else.” Yet, despite this personal approach, he acknowledges a desire to share his work: “That being said, I cannot keep it all to myself.”

In the Flow of Daily Life: Kendall’s Art in Shared Spaces

When asked about what he hopes viewers feel or perceive when experiencing his artwork, Josh shared, “I hope my love of music and mid-century design reaches my viewers. I hope my art starts conversations or inspires them to perceive things differently.” Reflecting on the role of third-spaces like Jones Coffee Roasters and Rosebud Coffee, Josh expressed his appreciation for these community hubs, saying, “I think third-spaces are an excellent way to exhibit art! These are spaces that hundreds, if not thousands, of people frequent daily. While they may be visiting for other reasons, the art being exhibited just hits them, and it’s there for all to see and appreciate.” He adds, “At the end of the day, I really don’t mind where the art is displayed. If it’s a place where people can see it, appreciate it, or talk about it, that’s great.”
