Road to Rome: Behind the Canvas
An ongoing blog series offering insights into the international art market through my own eyes. A journey that began in Japan, continued through Europe and Scandinavia, and concluded in New...
With each collection of artwork, Patrick Haemmerlein begins his journey by taking countless images of his environment, exploring both urban and rural perspectives. He then manipulates the photographs and prints the images on a large blueprint printer, layering them on wood until he is able to recreate the feeling of that moment and place while adding his found artifacts. Using Los Angeles as his creative playground, his recycled articles often include sheet music, books he has found, and paint. The result is a timeless, tangible sonnet to the city he loves, reflecting his thirst to rediscover it endlessly.
Immersed in a layered urban paradigm of reality versus fantasy, Haemmerlein creates a visual soundtrack as a backdrop to his stark silhouettes, choreographing torn pages of poetry and bars of music from the 1800s and early 1900s. Splashes of color punctuate the delicate balance between urban cityscapes and rural wildlife and natural scenes within Los Angeles and surrounding counties, exploring the coexistence of urban environments with natural foliage and wildlife through the beauty of contradiction. For example, the Urban Coyote, photographed in East Hollywood, is now integrated into Patrick's developed cityscapes to punctuate the actual urban existence of these native animals within Los Angeles.
As if the metropolis itself is submerged in introspection, Haemmerlein breathes life into these unique time capsules with branches and birds that mimic arteries and measured rhythm, entwining past, present, and future. He delivers these creations to the viewer in a narrative of perpetual ebb and flow. The buildings and cityscapes are from Los Angeles, while the animal and farm photos were mostly taken around his hometown area in upstate New York. These images are not only a juxtaposition of nature and industry but also a combination of imagery from his two homes—one rural and one urban.
