Collection: Studio Works by Robert Sherrill

Living and working in Southern California, Robert Sherrill is a painter working in oil and watercolor whose landscapes, still lifes, and portraits celebrate the dynamic interplay of light, form, and audacious color. Grounded in the plein air tradition and influenced by Fauvism, Impressionism, and California Expressionism, Sherrill’s work is gestural, richly textured, and deeply emotive. He honed his foundational skills at Riverside Community College before graduating from the prestigious ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena in 1990. Following his studies, he established an acclaimed career as an illustrator, backdrop artist, and art director, creating works for prominent clients such as Disney, DreamWorks, The Wall Street Journal, and the Sundance Film Festival.

Sherrill’s fine art practice remains rooted in a lifelong passion for observing the natural world, capturing scenes he experiences in real time outdoors. A celebrated figure in the regional art community, he actively mentors artists through weekly classes, college instruction, and institution workshops at destinations like the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens. Over a career spanning more than three decades, Sherrill has exhibited extensively across Southern California—including the Pasadena Museum of History and Tirage Gallery—winning numerous awards and authoring two published books.
