About the Group Art Show

This group art exhibition began to take shape months before the artwork was installed. For some artists, it involved finalizing pieces and carefully selecting the right works to showcase. For others, it was as simple as choosing works that would complement the other pieces on display. The goal was to create a cohesive and inviting presentation that guests of the cafe could enjoy, while also offering insight into the artists' concepts behind their collections or their journeys as creators, allowing viewers to understand the experiences that have influenced the creation of the artwork.

All participating artists are from South Pasadena, Pasadena, or Silver Lake, California. Each artist brings a unique creative style, ensuring that no two presentations are entirely alike, whether in concept or medium.

For example, Robert Sherrill uses oil paints on canvas, employing a plein air painting technique where scenes are captured directly in front of him on-site. In this series, he presents a collection of local landmarks well-known throughout Pasadena, South Pasadena, and Malibu. Among the pieces displayed are the South Pasadena Water Tower, the Colorado Street Bridge, and Busters, the former cafe where Jones Coffee Roasters now resides.

In contrast, Theresa Kennedy works with cold wax and oil on cradled wood boards, crafting abstract compositions that draw from her photographic background and are developed largely from her imagination.

In her abstract works, composition and the manipulation of different mediums are fundamental aspects of the creative process, shaping how the viewer experiences her paintings. At times, photos are used as inspiration for a painting or are integrated as collage elements within the abstract artwork. This contrast highlights the diverse perspectives and techniques showcased in the exhibition.

Zebulon’s street photography, in contrast, stands out for its mastery of photography and distinctive printing techniques, bringing a unique dimension to this diverse artistic showcase. His debut exhibition, titled For the Love of a City, presents a dichotomous series of black-and-white and color photography captured throughout Los Angeles, California.

The black-and-white images highlight the well-known environmental and architectural aspects of Los Angeles, while the color photographs focus on the often-overlooked individuals whom Sola describes as “the Angels of Los Angeles,” These figures form an integral part of the city’s diverse landscape. The series invites viewers to explore both the macro and micro elements of Los Angeles, offering an authentic perspective on the unique character and essence of the city.
