In this rigorous formal study, Eunice Lee interrogates the materiality of the everyday, juxtaposing the structural weight of the vessel with the fluid, ephemeral nature of its contents. Utilizing a sophisticated chromatic palette, Lee explores a spectrum of densities: the soup bowl and table are rendered in flat, opaque planes of gouache, establishing a sense of permanence and architectural groundedness. In contrast, the interior of the bowl is a masterclass in broken color, where agile, staccato brushwork captures the shimmering translucency of the broth and the delicate entanglement of the noodles.

The central spoon serves as a liminal anchor within the composition; rendered through a fusion of solid forms and fragmented pigments, it bridges the gap between the static weight of the tableware and the kinetic fluidity of the liquid. Lee’s deliberate manipulation of sharp, minimal shadows heightens the artificial luminescence of the scene, suggesting a focused, overhead light source that flattens the space into a graphic, high-contrast arrangement. Executed in her South Pasadena studio from archival studies captured on-site in Tokyo, the work serves as a tactile investigation into the interplay of artificial light and the reconstruction of memory. The raw, deckled edge of the paper further underscores the physical presence of the medium, grounding the domestic subject within the tradition of contemporary formalist abstraction.
